The Rock by Bro I’m always fascinated when spring rolls around and the snow begins to melt off the mountains causing the rivers to swell. The amount of water and the force it carries is absolutely amazing! Driving down the road the other day, I couldn’t help but notice a huge rock…a boulder…out in the middle of the river. The whitewater pounded and crashed against this rock with enough energy to kill a man. The impressive thing was…the rock never moved. Logs and treetops were quickly and easily being swept down river, but the rock never moved. Despite the waves and the incredible current pounding upon it…the rock never budged. I’m so glad God is our Rock that never moves. Regardless of the storms that come our way and the pounding we take from a multitude of situations and circumstances…God does not move. He can take! He does not budge. “I am the Lord…and I do not change.” Malachi 3:6

Unguarded by bro Spring bear season is here once again! And although I live in Montana, I like to add to my opportunities for black bear by heading over the mountain to take advantage of the abundant bear population the state of Idaho has to offer. It is legal to bait bears in Idaho and that has quickly grown to be the most popular…and efficient way to kill them. When I first started running bear baits, I had an experienced bear hunter tell me not to hunt the bait site until the bear had let his guard down. He said that far too many hunters make the mistake of hunting the bear (or bears) the first time the bait starts to get hit. At this point, the bears are very guarded as they come in and are alert to anything and everything out of the norm. He went on to say, “Hunt the site when you begin to see bear crap at the site. When he begins to crap around the site, you know he’s let his guard down and made that spot his own. This is the time you want to hunt him.” I followed this advice that spring bear season and sure enough the bear sign soon appeared. It was clear bears were living on and around my bait site. I went in for the kill and on my first afternoon in the stand, killed my first black bear. The bear came in without checking up, without watching its back, and went straight for the bait. An unguarded moment cost that bear it’s life. Unfortunately for us, we often experience similar consequences in our own lives. Countless men and women have fallen in an unguarded moment in their lives. When we fail to be on the lookout for the attack of satan in our life, we often get ambushed. When we no longer watch our back, satan sneaks closer. He’d love nothing more than to find us in our comfortable and unguarded moments in life and move in for the kill. No, he may not literally kill you. But he will do everything he can to kill your marriage, your family, your relationships, your career, and your reputation. 1 Peter 5:8 says, Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” And nothing can be more clear than the passage in Proverbs 4:23 that says, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” We’re living in a time when staying on guard seems tougher than ever before. To stand strong in the midst of a powerful enemy, we must watch what we do…watch what we see…watch where we go. And above all else, guard our heart. |
