Dad, I'm Talking To You

I have many tendencies that are, let's just say, not so stellar. One of these character traits is that I will over-extend myself in commitments because I want to experience all of life, and yet do it before lunch. So, I tend to stay over-committed. I'm working on it, but it's not an easy thing.
 
Cole was sitting in the back seat as we were pulling in to our neighborhood. I don't know what he was talking about, for I was thinking about some project in my short future. However, I clearly heard, "Dad, I'm talking to you." Which was followed up by, "You know, Dad, sometimes lately, I've been talking but you're not listening." Coming from a six year old, those words are like an arrow shot straight to the soul. I told him I was sorry, and that, yes, I'd been in my own little world lately. I promised to improve.
 
The thing about this crazy pace at which we all now live is that it doesn't just rob us of time ... it robs those around us of our greatest contribution to their lives ... which is our presence. When I live from appointment to appointment, meeting to meeting, I am never fully present. I pretty much live in constant transit from one thing to the next, and those who feel it most are in the back seat.
